A.C. Moore Nicole's Home Accents Scented Wax Melts Review

Nicole's Home Accents is A.C. Moore's store brand. The wax melts are available only on the east coast states, from Maine to Florida I believe. These melts have been fantastic for the past few years in terms of scent quality and throw. They used to cost $2.99 each, and I found out that they were actually manufactured by Rimports, the company that makes ScentSationals, Better Homes & Gardens (for Walmart) and AmbiEscents (for Bed Bath & Beyond). Which explains the fantastic quality.
However, a few months ago, A.C. Moore started putting some of their wax melts on clearance, and then they disappeared from many of the stores. Last week I found all new wax melts at A.C. Moore, but now they're $1.99 and they are now being made by Crossroads Candles, which I haven't had luck with as far as throw (http://www.scentedwaxreviews.com/2015/09/crossroads-candles-scented-wax-melts.html). Many of the scents are the same as Crossroads scents rather than the old Nicole's Home Accents scents. And some of the scents with the same name don't smell the same, such as Vanilla Hazelnut Macchiato (which smells completely different).

Unfortunately, these are all losers. I don't know of any other store-bought wax melt brands that have been this consistently bad in terms of throw. Most of these had either no throw at all, or barely detectable throw. What a disappointment. I would gladly pay $2.99 instead of the new cheaper price of $1.99 to get the older wax melts back that were manufactured by Rimports.
Sandalwood and Amber
This smells fantastic on cold sniff. It's a sweet perfumey sandalwood with what might be a hint of nag champa (to give it a bit of a hippie vibe). Unfortunately, throw was very weak, but might work in a very small room like a bathroom.
Throw: Not good, around a 1.5 or 2 out of 5.
Weekend Retreat This is floral that smells like lilac and maybe jasmine, but it's not overly sweet because of a fresh air note. It's a nice scent, although a bit generic, and would be great for a bedroom or bathroom. However, I couldn't smell anything when melted.
Throw: Poor, maybe a 1 out of 5, if that.
Lavender Silk This smells like lavender scented soap. It's a nice clean, relaxing scent, perfect for a bedroom or bathroom.
Throw: Not good, maybe a 2 out of 5.
Fresh Rain A pleasant, generic "rain" scented laundry type scent. It's more of a fabric softener scent, not a harsh laundry detergent scent. But it also has a fresh, slightly floral note. Another nice bathroom or bedroom scent. Unfortunately the scent dissipated in under 2 hours.
Throw: Very Good, around a 3 or 3.5 out of 5
Berries and Cream Fake berry scent, maybe raspberry, with a vinyl chemical note and maybe a smidgeon of wood. Often those chemical notes disappear when melted, so fingers crossed. And that's exactly what happened. It ended up being a nice berry scent, different and unique. But like Fresh Rain, the scent dissipated in 1.5 to 2 hours.
Throw: Good, around a 2.5 or 3 out of 5
Sweet Pear Crisp This really smells like pears, with a slight cinnamon note.
Throw: Zero throw, even from close up
Lemon Cookie This is a typical sweet lemon scent with both a slight bakery and a slight kitchen lemon note. It's nice, but really, you can't do much to ruin a lemon scent. Throw was almost non-existent, which is unusual, as lemon scents usually throw quite well no matter what the brand.
Throw: Almost zero throw, maybe a 1 out of 5, if that
Spruce and Cedar Very nice nutty spruce scent. I really like this scent.
Throw: Poor, maybe a 1.5 out of 5, if that.
Vanilla Hazelnut Macchiato This is a nice nutty scent with creamy vanilla and just a touch of coffee.
Throw: Poor, maybe a 1.5 out of 5
Sage and Citrus I have this scent in the regular Crossroads melts ("Sage & Citrus") and the throw is very good for that one. This combination has been done by other manufacturers, and they all smell pretty much the same. It's a hard scent to describe, kind of a spa scent or maybe some kind of cleaner. It's sweet and a little bit herbal, with maybe just a hint of lemongrass. Again, very hard to describe, but it's a great scent.
Throw: Almost zero throw, maybe a 1 out of 5, if that
Peanut Butter Cookie This smells fantastic, like a real peanut butter cookie! Rich, sweet, peanutty and buttery! The only other retail scent I've tried lately with a peanut butter note is Goose Creek Peanut Butter Sugar. These two scents don't smell very similar. The Goose Creek scent is sweeter and I can smell a vanilla crepe kind of scent. It has much less of a nutty note. The Nicole's scent is definitely more nutty, and if you're looking for a peanut scent, this is the one!
Throw: Finally, one with decent throw! Throw is good, around a 2.5 or 3 out of 5. But the scent started dissipating within 2 hours.
Roasted Espresso I saved this one for last because it's super strong on cold sniff, so I'm assuming (and hoping) the throw will be really good. It's a strong black coffee scent with a little bit of sweetness, and it smells fantastic. Melted, however, it turned into a bitter burned coffee scent that's not good at all.
Throw: Fair, around a 2.5 out of 5
I never thought I would try Scentsy wax because they're so
darned expensive. I discovered Walmart wax (ScentSationals and Better Homes
& Gardens) a few years ago, and I've been extremely happy with the scent
quality, throw, and of course, the price... $2 for a 2.5 oz. wax melt is hard
to beat. Scentsy, on the other hand, is $4.99 for 3.2 oz., which is almost
double the price of Walmart wax.
Plus you can only buy Scentsy from commissioned salespeople
(although I've heard that some stores sell Scentsy, although I've never found
any in my area). This means that unless you're attending a Scentsy party, you
can't sniff the wax before you buy it, the way you can at a store like Walmart.
And because Scentsy salespeople are commissioned and they have quotas to fill,
some of them tend to be a bit aggressive with their marketing, and I personally
have experienced less than honest tactics by quite a few Scentsy reps. I'm sure
the majority are honest individuals who love the product, want to spread the
joy, and maybe make a little money in the process. But the underhanded tactics
I've experienced from some reps in general kind of left a bad taste in my mouth
about the product.
So I was at a big neighborhood yard sale 2 weeks ago and
there was a Scentsy booth there. I was able to smell the wax and I was
impressed at the quality and strength of the scents on cold sniff. The new
scents were $4.99, but they had discontinued scents on sale for $2.50, so I
bought a bunch of each, which gave me some additional discounts, and when all
was said and done I got 15 scents that averaged around $3 a piece.
I got these home and started melting them one by one. A part
of me was hoping they'd be awful with weak throw, so I could justify my
anti-Scentsy judgment. But… I have to admit… I loved them. The scent quality was
fantastic, and they're complex scents. And the throw on most of them ranged
from very good to excellent.
So before I get to reviewing each scent, I guess the
question is, would I buy these again? Well, if I could get them for an average
of $3 to $3.50 a piece after discounts or including half price scents,
absolutely. I would still not buy these for $4.99 each if I couldn't also get
some at half price, and I would never buy them online and pay shipping, as shipping
is $8 for orders up to $79.99. Plus I'd prefer to sniff them before buying
them, although I'm fairly certain I'd be happy with most of the scents I would
get. If I didn't already have as much wax as I do now, like almost 1,000 wax
melts, I would be more likely to splurge on Scentsy.
"White florals—jasmine, sweet pea and freesia—juicy
berries, and sandalwood"
This is a rich warm classy ambery scent with a hint of some
kind of dark berry. It smells a lot like ScentSationals Blackberry Cider. This
one is supposedly everyone's favorite, and I can see why. Looking at the scent
notes, there are the berries, and I think I also smell sweet pea, but no
sandalwood.
"Golden tuberose and jasmine balanced by sandalwood,
vanilla and glowing amber."
This is a fruity floral, and very strong on cold sniff. I
can't determine the scent notes though, maybe pear? There's also a warmth in
the background like a sweet amber. It smells like an expensive feminine
perfume. This is another complex scent, and I really like it. Looking at the
scent notes, okay I do smell tuberose, not so much jasmine, and there's the
amber. And yes, there's a smidgeon of milky woodsiness way in the background
that's probably the sandalwood. When melted, I don't smell all the complex
notes, just a pleasant floral with a perfume vibe but also a smidgeon of baby
powder, which definitely makes this a bedroom or bathroom scent.
"Delight in the sun's last rays as brilliant
pomegranate, black currant and rhubarb dissolve into a horizon of sugared lemon
and vanilla frost"
Ooh I really like this one. I think I smell plum but there's
also a rich succulent strawberry note and a savory note and something warm like
amber, but also a very slight perfumey note, and maybe a salty lemon note.
Looking at the scent notes, okay pomegranate and black currant, I get that.
Rhubarb, that's probably the rich strawberry note I'm getting. And there's the
lemon. I don't smell vanilla at all. This is a very complex scent. This scent
smells almost exactly like Citrus Pop although a little sweeter.
"Sweet notes of melon, orange zest, coconut milk and
sultry night blooming jasmine"
I smell coconut and a really sweet fruit, but it's not a
tropical scent. There's also a floral in there, and maybe a smidgeon of sweet
lemon? Looking at the scent notes, it's probably the orange zest that I think
is the lemon (although I don't smell orange at all). I guess the sweet fruit is
the melon, but it doesn't smell like watermelon at all, maybe honeydew. Melted,
I do smell tropical fruit but it's really more of a nice sweet fruit candy
scent, and I don't smell floral when melted.
"Fresh lemon zest with a bright kiffir lime and
verbena leaf"
This is lemon with the soapy herbal lemongrass scent of
verbena. Melted, it smells like salty lemon with a lemongrass type herbal note.
It's not sweet at all. It's a nice scent, but lemongrass verbena type scents
are not my favorites in general.
"Savor the stillness of dawn with freshly ground
juniper berry, cardamom and a crackle of black pepper, enlightened by aromatic
bergamot and cedar"
I can't figure out what I'm smelling. I think it's cedar but
there are other notes in there I can't pin down. Maybe pepper and possibly a smidgeon of spruce
or balsam. But it's not a Christmasy scent. OK, the scent notes are spot on.
This is a nice, unique scent. Melted, it smells like a savory cedar, if that
makes sense. It's a nice, intense woodsy cedar, and I think the savory note is
the cardamom.

"Fresh, clean, and powdery, this dreamy scent evokes

This is 100% baby powder, and it's very strong on cold
sniff. When melted, it smells just like it does on cold sniff, like baby powder.
I've never found a store bought wax melt with a baby powder scent, and baby
powder scented vendor wax I've tried has always had poor throw. So this one is
a definite winner for me!
"Fresh apple and a luscious assortment of tropical
fruit enjoy a sprightly pop of whipped sugar and creamy vanilla."
This is a sweet fruity scent with a creamy note, maybe a
tropical fruit mixed with melon. It smells like a summer slushie! Looking at
the scent notes, I don't smell apple individually, as there are a lot of fruit
scents mixed in. Melted though, I smell a slightly bitter note, like grapefruit
rind, that gives it a bit of a cat pee vibe. This is the only scent out of all
the Scentsy scents I've tried here that I don't like when melted.
This smells almost exactly like Summer Sunset, but in this
one I can definitely smell the lemon and it's a sweet, salty bakery lemon. But
there's another note I can't figure out. Looking at the scent notes, maybe the
other note is bergamot (I don’t know what that smells like), but I don't smell
orange blossom at all (which is neroli, a beautiful scent that you'll never
forget even if you smell it once). I love this scent, but I swear I smell
lemon, and it's not really citrusy. Melted, it's a really rich scent, not very
sweet, kind of like lemon pound cake without frosting, and not all that lemony.
Hard to describe, but a fantastic scent.
"Enjoy the indulgence of sugared pears and juicy
nectarines melded together and blanketed by a crumble of golden brown sugar.
Above the rich layer of buttery batter sits a generous helping of warm caramel
cream"
Just like the scent name, this smells like pear drizzled in caramel.
Yummy! Melted, it has a slight chemical note. It's a nice scent, but there's
something slightly offputting in there.
"Papaya and honeydew sweetened with a hint of
coconut"
I smell sweet coconut, a sweet guava type tropical fruit,
and suntan oil. Looking at the scent notes, okay it's papaya and honeydew, not
guava. Really nice summery scent. Melted, it's VERY sweet, almost sickeningly
sweet. And it's a scent monster! This one needs a large room for sure; that
kind of sweetness can't be contained in one room.
"Pure, herbal fragrance of wild lavender from the
hills of France"
This is straight lavender, not overly sweet. It's slightly
medicinal, but not enough to detract from the scent. It's a nice lavender
scent. Scent started dissipating within 1.5 hours though.

"Lime and kiwi combine for a south of the border sweet
treat"
Fantastic sweet creamy milky sugary scent with a lime notes,
but also some other fruit that I can't figure out. OK looking at the scent
notes, the other fruit is kiwi. When melted though, I just smell slightly salty
lime with a bready background. It's a great scent.
"Pumpkin puree, grated nutmeg and maple sugar are
heightened by a hint of coconut shavings"
This smells heavenly. It's a rich sweet caramely pumpkin
scent with coconut and a hint of nutmeg. The caramel I smell is actually maple.
Melted, I smell mostly a rich buttery coconut, like buttery pie crust with
coconut mixed in, but it's not salty like some rich wax scents can be. This one
is a scent monster and took over the entire house.
This is a review of 3 pineapple scented wax scents at Walmart: Better
Homes & Gardens Hawaiian Pineapple Cilantro, Better Homes &
Gardens Pineapple Kiwi Colada, Better Homes & Gardens Tropical Pina
Colada, and ScentSationals Papagayo Beach. My impression of these is:
Yuck. But that's really because I don't like pineapple scents in

Aldi Scented Wax Melts by Huntington Home - Spring 2016 Scents Review

Huntington Home scented wax melts and candles are made by Hanna's Candles, the same company that makes the newer style Ashland melts at Michael's Arts & Crafts, and also the Mainstays triple melts at Walmart (which were discontinued last year). Aldi brought these new scents out in the second week of February, and they'll be available until they sell out (generally only a few weeks).
This is a review of Hobby Lobby DD Wickless Fragrance Cubes scented wax melts. The DD brand is only available at Hobby Lobby (both stores and online, although I think the stores carry a larger and more current selection).

Both the scent and the throw scores on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the best. The scent score is how much I liked the scent, so it's totally subjective. You may love a scent I dislike, and vice versa.
The throw score is how far the scent throws when melted. 0 means no throw, 1 is poor, 2 is fair, 3 is good, 3.5 is very good, 4 is excellent, and 4.5 is fantastic. 5 means it's a "scent monster" and I could smell the scent even outside the house (very few wax melts are a 5).

It doesn't have the sinus clearing effect that mint has, but it just has that note. It is quite soapy, like a bar of natural herbal soap. But it's not a body wash scent, as it's not really sweet. I don't really smell wood, although maybe a barely noticeable hint of cedar that I wouldn't know was there if I didn't know it was one of the notes. It smells better on cold sniff than when melted; melted, it's a little too "herbal soapy" to me, and would smell better with some sweetness added.

Very strong on cold sniff. I smell the blueberries first, with a raspberry note, and the creaminess of the cheesecake. The berries don't smell authentic, and have a very sweet slightly candy note, but that does not detract from the overall scent. But when melted, something strange happened. The scent took on a very slight sweet baby poop note. My roommate walked in and asked me if the cat had an accident, and I wondered myself.

On cold sniff I smell fresh air, herbal and slightly green, with a barely noticeable apple note and a smidgeon of spearmint. I think the spearmint I'm smelling is actually the fennel. The cashmere/amber is very slight and barely noticeable. I can't figure out this scent. When melted, I smell more of the apple with some other notes, but not wood, so I don't think the name "White Birch" describes this scent at all.

This is not a sweet floral lavender, but not an herbal lavender either (no "spa" or "green" notes). On cold sniff it has a slightly industrial note, like lavender scented cleaner but not as "clean" (definitely not a Fabuloso cleaner scent), or old lavender scented soap that lost a lot of its sweetness. But cold sniff doesn't do it justice, as it smells much better when melted, a more authentic lavender scent without anything added. This is a good "blank slate" scent that could be used to make other scents. I would probably add amber and/or vanilla to it, or go for a spa scent by adding lemon and/or sage. Throw started to fizzle after only an hour.

This has a fake berry scent, like that from a Tuscany Candle wax melt. It's almost like a Christmas berry like a bayberry, but not cranberry. It has a soapy note, and I don't smell coconut or caramel.

I definitely smell the nut, plus the sweetness of the brown sugar, and maybe a barely noticeable trace of cinnamon. This is light on cold sniff. It smells much better melted than on cold sniff. Melted, it almost has a slight perfumey quality to it, which smells amazing when mixed with the brown sugar and nuttiness.

This is definitely a tropical scent. I smell mango I think, or maybe it's pineapple, with a slightly tart lemony, orange or satsuma note. But it's not a harsh tropical scent, due to the sweetness of the vanilla and a slight ambery perfume note. Fairly strong on cold sniff, so disappointed that throw was so weak when melted.

Sweet Tea

I bought this one after I already did this review, so it wasn't included originally. It smells exactly like iced tea with a smidgeon of lemon. This scent lasted over 24 hours!
I also compared DD Sweet Tea with Colonial Candles Sweet Iced Tea. DD is stronger on the tea side, like sweet iced tea with lemon. CC is stronger on the lemon side, like sweet lemonade with a hint of tea. I can smell some of the background notes coming through with the CC version (mostly the peach and the honey), while the DD version is just sweet iced black tea with lemon and nothing else. The CC version smells like powdered iced tea, and the DD version smells more like fresh authentic strong iced tea. Although I like both scents, I think I like the DD a little bit more.
